Počitelj Citadel

Počitelj Citadel, known as *Počiteljska tvrđava* in Bosnian, is a historic fortress located in the picturesque village of Počitelj, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Built in 1383 by King Tvrtko I of Bosnia, the citadel was strategically positioned to control trade routes between the Bosnian inland and the Adriatic Sea. The fortress features a prominent tower that rises 45 meters above sea level, providing a commanding view of the surrounding landscape.

Over the centuries, the citadel underwent significant expansions, particularly during the Ottoman period when additional fortifications and structures were added, including residential buildings, a mosque, and public baths. The architectural ensemble showcases a blend of medieval and Ottoman influences, making it an important example of the region's cultural heritage.

Today, Počitelj Citadel is part of a historic urban area that has been declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is also included on UNESCO's Tentative List for World Heritage Sites, highlighting its significance as a well-preserved example of an Ottoman-Mediterranean settlement. The citadel attracts visitors for its historical value and stunning views over the Neretva River valley.
