Our trip to Kashmir easily ranks among our all-time favourite vacations. The region’s breathtaking natural beauty and the warmth of its people left a lasting impression on us.
Sadly, Kashmir sits at the heart of a long-standing dispute between two nations, each laying claim to it in full. For those curious about the background, Andrew Chang of the CBC does an excellent job explaining the region's complex history.
Despite the tensions and the email we received below, we feel safe here in New Delhi. Our school stays in close contact with the American Embassy and local authorities, and their guidance has been clear: stay calm. The atmosphere is markedly different from what we experienced in Lahore during 9/11. Life, in Delhi at least, remains normal.
Global Affairs Canada sent us the following email on May 7th, 2025.

Dear Registrants,

On May 7, 2025. the Indian military conducted airstrikes on several targets in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and Punjab Province, resulting in casualties.
There has been artillery fire across the line of Control, as well as missile and drome attacks in Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir. These attacks could result in the disruption of essential services.
Tensions could increase and the situation could deteriorate rapidly.
There are air travel disruptions and local authorities could take additional measures, such as closing the airspace and blocking internet access. Many airports across northern and western India have temporarily suspended operations.
If you are in or near the affected areas:
- monitor local and international media to stay informed of the rapidly evolving situation
- contact your airline to ask how this could impact your travel plans
- follow the instructions of local authorities, including air-raid sirens and evacuation orders.
- be vigilant and prepared to shelter in place

Rather than delve into the region’s history or take sides, I thought I’d simply share some photos from our trip to Kashmir. The shots of boats and waterways are from Dal Lake in Srinagar, while the mountain scenes were captured near Sonamarg.
