During our scenic journey from Mariscal Sucre Quito International Airport to the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon in Tena, our guide, Milton, stopped to show us an astonishing variety of these tiny marvels.
Witnessing them up close was an unforgettable experience. They felt very safe near humans, so we were able to hear their wings beat at incredible speeds, creating a soft hum. Their speeds made it hard to take photos as they darted between feeders and bushes.

Zoologico El Arca
Zoo El Arca is a wildlife sanctuary dedicated to the conservation of species from the Ecuadorian Amazon. They are located in Cotundo, Archidona, Ecuador. There are other animals, such as the lion, which are not endemic to the Amazon. Perhaps they were pets that were abandoned.
While not endemic to South America, the lions there would have been pets at one time.
Originally from Canada and based in New Delhi, we blog about our life and trips while traveling overseas. We are in the process of purchasing land so we can build our retirement home in Ecuador.
