Climate

Ecuador ranks second on the Index. Cotacachi, sitting at 2,418 meters (7,933 feet), experiences spring-like weather year-round, with only a light hoodie or sweater needed during mornings or evenings. The climate was important to us.

We favoured Cotacachi's climate over Panama's, which, despite being International Living's top retirement choice, proved too hot and humid for our preferences.

According to WeatherSpark, the average temperature in Cotacachi ranges from 11°C to 22°C.

Cost of Living

At a street corner, a small, elderly woman sells bright red strawberries, heaped high on her wheelbarrow. A grocery bag, half-full, sells for just $2 USD Ecuador uses U.S. dollar bills but mints its own coinage.

We recently had breakfast out as a family, and the total bill was under $20 USD. Later, a cab ride clear across town only set us back $2. It really drives home that everything here is more affordable – from fresh produce and meat to clothing, you'll find prices are much lower.

Cotacachi Wall Murals

As you walk around the town, it's impossible not to notice the beautiful murals painted on buildings and walls. Here is a short video of some of the murals.
