Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal, India
Back in April, Kirsi and her friend Brook visited the Taj Mahal when they came to Delhi after their first year of university. Kirsi took the photos below.

This white marble monument was built by Emperor Shah Jahan in the 1600s as a tomb for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died during childbirth. Construction took over 20 years and required more than 20,000 workers to complete.

The white marble actually changes colour throughout the day: it appears pinkish at dawn, white during the day, and golden at sunset. The four minarets around the main building lean slightly outward on purpose. This was designed so that if there was ever an earthquake, the towers would fall away from the tomb instead of onto it. The Taj Mahal is now considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
